Amsterdam | Foodmarkt Noord

In an industrial warehouse on the northshore of Amsterdam is new type of supermarket has opened its gates the end of November. It's a concept by huge chain Jumbo, with 2600 square meters of divers and mostly fresh produce. Upon entrence you grab your basket, but you can also reach for
some fresh sushi or a warm slice of pizza. Or maybe a veggie burger or wok-to-go.

So it's a foodcourt and a supermarket. There's a butcher at work (with big chunks of meat hanging about), a baker (not just a bread-perfume) and a very well-informed cheese connaisseur. They have beautiful vegetables but also the not-so-good-looking types they urge you to buy. (I was at the Albert Cuypmarkt a few months back when a guy behind me commented that the carrots at that stall looked very dirty... and his girlfriend had to explain that that is exactly how they are supposed to look. Don't discriminate against less atractive looking carrots.)

Because it's Jumbo, part of the supermarkt is, well just a Jumbo supermarkt. But a nicely designed one, with a bit of an old-fashioned, vintage, hipster vibe. With a lot of choice, also for vegetarians like me.
