A week is apparently popping up: Pop Up Week Festival. From the 18th until 28th of September, you are invited to explore new and temporary hidden gems in our ever-changing city. You can visit loads of shops, galleries and characters for special happenings around the city.

Although I don't really care for the name of the festival (at festivals things and places always pop up, so to me it's too much of a pleonasm), but the festival seems to have some great things going on. A few of my favorites (some are for free, some need tickets):

balls of chef thor.jpg

At the Wicked Kitchen, Chef Thor will surprise you with his own selection of seven different-flavored vega bitterballs without any additional E numbers. From Thai coconut and truffle funghi to Dutch blue cheese spinach or curry tomato bitterballs.

WOW joins the Pop Up Week Amsterdam with a spontaneous exhibition in the huge stairwell ofWOW. Five Amsterdam based street artists areasked to create or provide work for the large wall surfaces in the stairwell of WOW, a true vertical gallery. They inspire themselves by the colors of the different floors of the building: red, yellow, blue and green; thus a nod to the famous work of Barnett Newmann (Who‘s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue).

Come on out to Roest to see thousands of sneakers, many exclusive wanna-haves and vintage pairs, in each price range. More than 40 national and international vendors from countries like Germany, France, Belgium, England and of course many from our home country will attend. Accesoires are also available from brands like Gorilli, Supportyourlocals and Love Grenade (who will bring their own Tattoo studio). There will be a special customization area with artists working during the event.

de slang.jpg

You know that squatter house on the Spuistraat that has a huge snake painted on it? Stop by De Slang, a famous alto cultural hotspot that will show unique films at their Blue Rascal Cinema, for free.

Come to the The Neighbour’s Magnolia Hotel and relax with some refreshments. Taste one of the three boozy popsicles created by well-known Amsterdam chef Jean Beddington. The three exciting flavors are Bloody Mary, Strawberry Daiquiri and Dark ‘n’ Stormyboozy.

Explore hilarious cultural differences in this fun photo contest. Three events during pop-up week highlight photos of products with names that seem funny to English speakers.

Dutch artist Bram Graafland, a.k.a Screaming Kitchen Prince (Dutch: Gillende Keukenprins) is the only one in the world in possession of a kitchen-organ-drum-system. He took an old 1970’s keyboard and built a kitchen around it, including a sink, a stove and an oven. While he’s making fresh music, he is also preparing fresh pancakes! His show is a crazy, energetic, and expressive combination of music and food.

A ‘soiree’ filled with Naughty Chansons D’Amour and jazz&soul. These chansons will be brought to you by Housediva Misz Bunty Aka “Miss Che Che”, accompanied by musical wonder child and multi-instrumentalist PePe.

Bring Your Own Hammock and Meat BBQ Bring your own meat / fish/ veggies and hammock and Hotel Buiten will take care of the rest! EUR 5 gets you a plate and sauces, bread, salad, etc. which are included. So grill, chill and enjoy the sunset at this beautifully located spot right in front of the Sloterplas.

In a former exit of the Nieuwmarkt metro station you fill find pop-up art gallery “The Escalator”. The gallery is hidden in a toy store and will be curated by two famous Amsterdam based art galleries.

Amsterdam’s recently opened Library’s Secret Speakeasy Society is a throwback to days gone by. Here you can sample classic wines and wine-based cocktails and the 1920′s vibe that comes along with the American prohibition era. During the workshop you can pick up techniques and learn tricks for the best wine-based cocktails.

harbour safari.jpg

Harbour Safari At Night with live music This evening is the last boat trip through the Amsterdam harbour and it will be a very special edition with live music performances.

grande.jpg

La Grande Abbuffata tells the story of four friends who gather in a villa for the weekend with the express purpose of eating themselves to death. Watch this great classic movie while having an extensive and exclusive traditional Italian dinner at Amsterdam’s best Italian restaurant Il Pacioccone.

There's loads more going on, check that here. Have fun!
